Student Employment

Students who do not qualify under the provisions of Subsidiary Legislation 217.22, and are following courses which exceed 90 days, may take up employment in Malta. Access to employment may be granted subject to conditions imposed by Jobsplus, including those sectors where these students would be allowed to work. Students will only be allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours per week after their first three (3) months of study in Malta. These provisions are subject to change from time to time according to the discretion of the Ministry responsible for Jobsplus. TCNs pursuing a full-time course leading to a higher education qualification recognised by MQRIC may take up employment for a maximum period of 20 hours per week, starting from their first year of study. In such instances, the student may apply for a work permit upon the issuance a residence permit, which will include specific reference to S.L. 217.22. It must also be noted that an application for a work permit will be considered more favourable if the employment offer is related to the student’s chosen area of studies.

Get Qualified

Accredited programmes are eligible for funding under the Malta Get Qualified Scheme.

The Get Qualified is an initiative that supports the personal development of individuals for the achievement of qualifications and certifications required by industry.  The incentive is applicable for individuals who are self-funded and who are following a course of studies leading to a certification, diploma, degree or post-graduate degree courses. Upon completion of the programme, you will be able to recover up to 70% of expenses on both the registration and tuition fee.

In practice, for every 1000 euro of enrollment fee, the student who meets the GET QUALIFIED requirements upon completion of the program will recover 700 euros.

Students following courses approved by the Ministry for Education and Employment are granted tax credits on the following costs:

  • fees paid by the individual to the university, institution or other entity recognized by the Ministry for Education and Employment for the training and educational services leading to the approved qualification.
  • fees for sitting for examinations required to achieve the approved qualification.

Eligibility

A qualification shall be considered eligible if approved as level 3 or higher on the Malta Qualification Framework (MQF) grading structure. Further information may be found in section 4.1 of the guidelines.

In case of specialised training which is not MQF level rated, the training will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

The qualification or certification is to be granted on merit that is verified through a form of assessment that is specific to that qualification or certification.
